In my youth I used to go out on a Saturday night and I discovered a “rule” of pub toilets. They either had toilet paper or a bolt on the door, never both. Now I am aged and wear a lot of cardigans I have found a similar sort of either/or rule, cardigans either have pockets or they fasten. I would prefer if they did both but alas, that is like searching for a unicorn in a haystack.
I’ve been getting out my winter clothes and have found a magnificent maxi length cardigan, it buttons all the way down but obviously this means that it has no pockets (I do have another maxi length cardigan with pockets but, guess what? aye, no fastenings). I like this cardie though, it is thick and very warm and so I have been figuring out how to pocket it. Lying in bed not sleeping seems to be when I have my best ideas and this has proved to be the case again. I thought I could crochet solid granny squares and sew them on. The only thing I was concerned about was the corners which tend to be chain spaces, I didn’t want gaps where my pocket stuff could fall out.
After a little Ravelry search I found a square with solid corners for only a couple of quid so I bought it. That’s it really, I made up the squares and sewed them on. I did think about lining them to make sure nothing could poke out but to be honest I couldn’t be bothered. Sometimes my motivation seems to evaporate after a short time and I just want to get done and this was one of those times.
They do look a little odd I suppose if you’re really looking but I suspect the vast majority of people won’t even notice them and I am not fussed about a little oddity. I’m going to make pockets for the cardie that I knit last year and I have matching yarn for that so they shouldn’t stand out as much. It is certainly quicker than knitting them which suits me.
